Born of the ancient elements of earth, water, air, and fire – Kona Rainforest coffee, with its rich aroma and velvety depths, embodies a mystique that goes far beyond mere beans. It’s a transformative art, turning ordinary mornings into sacred rituals as its enchanting fragrance stirs the senses.
At Kona Rainforest Coffee, the journey begins on our 80-acre hillside farm, where coffee trees are planted in the rich, volcanic soil of Mauna Loa, naturally fertilized with essential minerals like potassium, magnesium, and phosphorus.
As a certified organic farm, we don’t tamper with Mother Nature’s perfect recipe of natural minerals, rich soil, Hawaiian sun, and rainforest water. Our carefully selected varietals, chosen to thrive in Kona’s high-altitude climate, flourish naturally.
In harmony with the seasons, the coffee trees awaken, their blossoms unfolding to blanket the hillside in a cascade of delicate white petals we call Kona Snow. Their sweet fragrance beckons our farm bees, who dance among the blooms, naturally pollinating the flowers and nurturing the birth of thousands of vibrant green coffee cherries. Kissed by the sun, the green beans slowly ripen to sweet red cherries that encase the precious coffee bean.
Each tree is carefully handpicked by our farm workers over several weeks to select only the red cherries as they ripen.
Once the coffee cherries are picked they undergo several key processing steps to transform them into beans ready for roasting.
During the wet process, the cherries are stripped of their outer skin and pulp before being fermented in water. Once cleaned, the beans are set out to dry in the Hawaiian sun on our dry deck. Over about two weeks, the beans are raked and turned to achieve the ideal moisture level. When sufficiently dried, the protective outer layers are removed, revealing the coffee beans hidden within.
These beans are then graded and sorted with precision, ensuring only the best make it through. Once selected, the green beans are ready to be roasted—a transformative process that unlocks the rich flavors and aromas of 100 percent Kona Coffee.
The final step is entrusted to our master roaster, who skillfully and slowly coaxes out the rich, deep color and flavor of Kona Rainforest beans. As they roast, the mouthwatering aroma of freshly roasted 100% Kona coffee fills the air, complemented by the subtle, distinctive notes of each unique varietal.
This meticulous journey, from green beans to cherries and beyond, is a testament to the care and craft that defines our exceptional Kona coffee.
